About Permanent Makeup

The specialized techniques used for permanent makeup are often referred to as "micropigmentation". Artists use a tool similar to a "pen" or cartridge containing pigment that deposits color into the skin, mimicking the appearance of makeup. At Haven Esthetics, our master artist is specially trained to fully customize the shape and color that best suits you, delivering the one of a kind and natural-looking results you desire.

Permanent Makeup FAQ

What is Microblading?

Microblading is the perfect solution for people who have thin or overplucked eyebrows or for those who want to define, darken, or reshape their eyebrows. Originating in Asia, microblading is a type of permanent makeup that enhances the natural appearance of the eyebrows. The process consists of using a hand-held tool with a blade formed of tiny needles to scratch pigment into the top of the dermis layer of the skin in fine, short strokes resembling hair. Each individual hair stroke is hand-drawn by the artist and blended seamlessly with the client's existing eyebrow hair. Our master artist at Haven is specially trained to evaluate your facial features and recommend a shape suitable for you to deliver the natural-looking results you desire.

What are Powder Brows?

Powder brows are a type of permanent makeup that is designed to create eyebrows with a soft powdery effect, mimicking the appearance of powder makeup. The powder effect is performed using a shading technique with a tool similar to a tattoo gun. A small needle is used to place the pigment into the skin with a quick hand motion, resulting in the pixilated effect of powder makeup. To add density, our artist layers the pixels repetitively, appearing as though the brow was filled in with a pencil or powder. The art in shading is to layer the pixels without appearing denser and darker than the natural eyebrow hair. Our artist at Haven is specially trained to evaluate your facial features and recommend a shape suitable for you to deliver the natural-looking results you desire.

What is the process?

Each service requires is a two-step process. In the first appointment, the client's facial features are evaluated and a design is drawn to be pre-approved by the client. Once approved, the permanent make up process begins. After the procedure, mild scabbing is expected and aftercare is required. The treated area should be completely healed in approximately 4-6 weeks. In the second appointment, a touch up is performed. It is possible to make adjustments based on the color used to suit the client's skin undertones. Corrections such as these are an essential part of the process, as everyone's skin receives ink differently. Our Philosophy at Haven Esthetics, is a conservative approach. We can always add more boldness at the touch up appointment.

What should I expect at my permanent make up appointment?

A standard appointment will include a consultation to discuss the design, disinfection of the area, design with client approval, application of numbing agent, microblading process with many check-ins for client feedback, pigment bake, and application of aftercare balm.

What should I expect after my permanent make up appointment?

The treated area will experience several phases during the healing process.

Days 1-4: The treated area will appear very dark. This is because the pigment is sitting on top of the skin and has not yet settled in completely. The color of the pigment will soften gradually. Do not worry if you notice some pigment on the tissue, as this is excess pigment that is naturally removed from the skin. The treated area may also swell.

Days 5-7: Once the healing process begins, it will appear as flaking or dry skin. This may give the impression that the pigment is fading too quickly, however, it is excess pigment that is naturally removed from the skin.

Days 8-12: The treated area may appear as though the pigment has completely faded. Do not worry, take a deep breath and trust the process.

Days 14-28: The treated area may still appear slightly patchy or uneven, but the pigment will begin to "reappear" as it settles in and the healing process continues. A touch up may be performed at a minimum of 3 weeks after your initial procedure to allow for complete healing.

How long does the treated area take to heal?

The treated area should be completely healed from the inside out in approximately 4-6 weeks.

When should I schedule touch-ups?

Touch-ups vary depending on the person's skin type and how well their skin retains the pigment. When you begin to notice the pigment fading, you should book a touch-up. Typically, touch-ups are performed every 9-18 months.

Who should not receive permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup is not recommended for people with excessive oily skin, eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, dermatitis, rosacea, and chronic acne. If you have sensitive skin, you may be more prone to bleeding. Similarly, people with autoimmune disorders including lupus or frontal fibrosing alopecia may also experience complications. Please refrain from permanent makeup if you are pregnant, nursing, have hemophilia, a heart condition, trichotillomania, or are taking any steroids and antibiotics.
