How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian or Bikini Wax

If you’ve decided to get your very first Brazilian or bikini wax, congrats! Kind of a big deal, right? We think so too! The benefits of waxing are truly life-changing. Even so, if you've never had a Brazilian or bikini wax before, it might be a little intimidating. Many first-time clients come in feeling nervous. They are usually nervous about the pain. More times than not, you will build up the pain in your head way worse than it actually is. Waxing is a quick sting that doesn’t linger long. It is much more tolerable than you think! Here are a few tips to prepare for your appointment and ensure that your waxing experience is as comfortable as possible.

1. Allow hair to grow a quarter of an inch.

We require that you have a minimum of 3 weeks of hair growth. The length of your hair should be about ¼ of an inch, or a “grain of rice” to wax properly. It is important to have enough hair growth for the wax to adhere to the hair and successfully pull it out from the root. If the wax does not adhere, it may break the hair, not pull out the hair at all, or cause irritation to the skin. More so, ensuring that your hair is the correct length will help with future waxes. When all of the hair is removed on the same cycle, it ensures that it will grow back at the same time.

2. Wear loose fitting clothes.

When it comes to waxing, it’s important to wear the appropriate clothing to protect your skin and avoid irritation after your appointment. We recommend wearing soft, loose fitted clothing around the area you are having waxed for maximum comfort. For Brazilian and bikini waxes, we recommend wearing cotton underwear to allow for this area to breathe properly.

3. Exfoliate 24 hours before.

Exfoliation removes debris and dead skin cells, making it easier for the wax to adhere to the hair. We recommend using a physical or chemical exfoliant on the waxed area 24 hours before and 48 hours after your appointment. Continue exfoliating 2-3 times per week to prevent ingrown hairs and bumps that come with regrowth. Don’t forget – the area needs to be completely clean before your waxing service. Taking a shower beforehand also helps to open the pore for easy hair removal.

4. Stay hydrated and avoid caffeine.

Drink plenty of water before your appointment to stay hydrated. When you’re dehydrated, your pores hold onto the hair and may break. We also recommend holding off on caffeine until after your appointment, as it stimulates the skin making it more sensitive.
